Where Does Electricity Actually Come From? (A Genuinely Friendly Explanation)

You plug something in and it works. That's honestly enough for most of us, most of the time.

But here's the thing — once I started understanding even the basics of where that electricity comes from and how it travels to your outlet, I started making decisions that have saved me real money. Not because I became an energy expert, but because a little clarity goes a long way.


So let's start at the very beginning.


Energy is just the ability to do stuff ... like work



That's it. Whether it's a nearby coal plant, a solar panel on your roof, or a log on a fire — they're all just different ways of converting one form of energy into another form that we can actually use. Hot shower. Cold drink. Lights on. Stanford's energy researchers describe these as "energy services" — the things people actually care about. Everything in between is just the journey to get there.


Here's something that surprised me when I first really understood it: every time energy is converted from one form to another, some of it is lost! Your utility company burns fuel to generate electricity, sends it down power lines, and by the time it reaches your outlet, a significant portion of the original energy is already gone as heat. That's not a flaw — it's just physics. But it's a big reason why using less is almost always the cheapest and most effective first step in managing your energy costs.


Stock vs. Flow — and why it matters to your wallet



Energy resources basically fall into two buckets. Some are stock resources — fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. We have a set amount of them on earth and when they're gone, they're gone. Others are flow resources — solar, wind, hydro — which are continuously renewed. The sun keeps showing up. The wind keeps blowing.

This isn't just an environmental point — it's a financial one. Flow resources, once the infrastructure is in place, have essentially zero fuel cost! That's a big part of why solar made financial sense for my home, and why it increasingly makes sense for a lot of people.


The grid — that thing we all sort of know about


When you flip a switch, you're drawing from an interconnected system of power plants, transmission lines, and local infrastructure that has to balance supply and demand in real time, constantly. It's genuinely one of the most complex systems humans have ever built. And for most of us, it's completely invisible — until it isn't (hello, power outage).

Understanding the grid, even just a little, helps explain why energy prices fluctuate, why backup battery storage like a Powerwall changes the equation, and why the shift toward renewables is happening the way it is. We'll dig into all of that in future posts.


Why I actually installed a Powerwall — and it wasn't what you might think



Our neighborhood grid is over 50 years old and runs above ground. It has always been unreliable — outages ranging from a few hours to a full week aren't unusual. A few years ago a single tree took down a secondary line and our entire neighborhood lost power for a week.

Except our house.

That's when my neighbors started asking questions — and honestly, it's when I realized that energy resilience isn't a luxury or an environmental statement. Sometimes it's just not wanting to throw out a refrigerator full of food.

The climate benefits are real and they matter to me. But grid reliability was the reason I wrote the check.
